DAY CARE/PRESCHOOL CHECKLIST

HEALTH AND SAFETY:
* Does the facility have non-toxic play materials?
* Are there two first-aid kits available?
* Are the hand washing procedures posted & observed after toileting & before eating/serving?
* Are the cribs labeled and at least two feet apart?
* No bibs, pacifier strings or anything like this left in the cribs?
* Is there a cot cleaning procedure?
* Is there a medication policy and are all medications kept out of the reach of the children?
* Are the children’s personal belongings labeled?
* No broken toys around?
* Are the electrical outlets covered?
* No extension cords in use?
* Is there a diaper changing policy?
* Is there a very strict pick-up policy for the children?
* Do the children have clean faces & hands?
* Where is the garbage kept in the classroom? How often is it taken out?
* Children do not sleep in swings or pumpkin seats unless they have a note from the doctor?
* No bottles are propped?
* Does the teacher take classroom attendance?

FACILITY:
* Safe indoor/outdoor areas?
* Orderly clean play areas?
* Bright pleasant rooms with children-created art?
* Sanitary bathrooms & diaper areas?
* Enough equipment & diaper areas?
* Are the fire & tornado plans posted?
* Is the License & current state inspections posted?
* Does the facility look and smell clean?
* Are the windows clean?
* Are the toys clean?
* Are the entrances locked?
* Are the carpets & floors cleaned?
STAFF:
* Does the staff have good personal hygiene?
* Is the staff professionally dressed?
* Are the caregivers down at the children’s level during activities?
* Do the caregivers sit with the children during activities?
* Are the activities age-appropriate?
* Do the caregivers listen closely to each child & use positive language?
* How do the caregivers deal with the children’s behavior?
* Do the caregivers know the state mandated teacher-to-child ratios?
* Do the caregivers look happy & act as if they like the children?
* Are the children & the parents greeted when they enter the classroom?
* Is it easy to see that the caregivers put “KIDS FIRST” in everything they do?
* Do the caregivers comfort the children when necessary?
* Do the caregivers speak in a kind voice with no demeaning tone?
* Are the caregivers certified?
* Were you acknowledged when you came into the classroom?
PROGRAM:
* What are the adult-to-child ratios?
* Does the facility have a formal curriculum and can you see a copy of it?
* Does it appear that the curriculum is being followed?
* Does the program appear to be organized?
* Is there supervised rest time?
* Are there plenty of materials for the children to play with?
* Is there dramatic play, learning stations, science, music, art & math?
* Is there lots of laughing, caring and sharing?
* Do the children look happy and involved?
* Are the children allowed to play?
* Can the parents/guardians drop by for a visit at any time?
* What is the discipline policy?
* Can you and your child have a “trial run” together?
* Does it appear that good behavior is encouraged?
* Is there a “sign in/sign out” procedure?
* Are the parents involved with the facility?
* Does the facility appear to have parenting information readily available?
* Are the classroom routines posted in each classroom?
* Does the facility have a policy for video time?
