- Does the facility have non-toxic play materials?
- Are there two first-aid kits available?
- Are the hand washing procedures posted & observed after toileting & before eating/serving?
- Are the meals and snacks provided of nutritious quality with attractive and appropriately-sized servings of “Kid-friendly” foods?
- Are bibs, pacifier strings and other items of safety concern removed from the cribs?
- Is there a cot cleaning procedure?
- Is there a medication policy? Are all medications kept out of the reach of the children?
- Are the children’s personal belongings labeled?
- Are broken toys removed from the play areas?
- Are the electrical outlets covered?
- Are extension cords prohibited from use?
- Is there a diaper changing policy?
- Is there a strict pick-up policy that is adhered to for the children?
- Do the children have clean faces & hands?
- Where is the garbage kept in the classroom? Is this area odor free? How often is it taken out?
- Is there a policy to eliminate children sleeping in swings or pumpkin seats unless they have a note from the doctor?
- Are infants fed by an attendant, so that bottles are not propped in baby’s mouth?
- Does the teacher take classroom attendance?

- Are there orderly and clean play areas?
- Does the facility design include bright, pleasant rooms with child-created art?
- Are the bathrooms & diaper areas sanitary and odor-free?
- Are the equipment & diaper areas well supplied?
- Are the fire & tornado and emergency preparedness plans posted?
- Is the facility license & current state inspections posted?
- Does the facility look and smell clean?
- Are there ample and clean windows for a naturally light and bright environment?
- Are the toys sanitized daily and more often as needed?
- Are the entrances locked?
- Are the carpets & floors swept and free of items that increase risks of falls?

- Do the individual staff members demonstrate good personal hygiene?
- Is the staff professionally dressed?
- Are the caregivers sitting, squatting or kneeling down at the children’s eye level during activities?
- Do the caregivers sit with the children and maintain positive interaction and order during activities?
- Are the planned activities age-appropriate? Do they spark the children’s interest and hold their attention for a reasonable amount of time for their age?
- Do the caregivers listen closely to each child & use positive language?
- How do the caregivers deal with the children’s difficult behaviors?
- Do the caregivers know and abide by the state mandated teacher-to-child ratios?
- Do the caregivers look happy & genuinely like caring for the children?
- Are the children & the parents greeted warmly when they enter the classroom? Were you acknowledged when you came into the classroom?
- Is it easy to see that the caregivers put a “KIDS FIRST” motto in everything they do?
- Do the caregivers comfort the children when necessary?
- Do the caregivers speak in a kind voice with no demeaning tone?
- Are the caregivers certified and degreed teachers and day care providers?

- What are the adult-to-child ratios that you are observing today?
- Does the facility have a formal curriculum? Can you see a copy of it? Is the curriculum being followed?
- Are parents and guardians made aware of the curriculum objectives regularly for reinforcement of lessons at home?
- Does it appear that the curriculum is being followed?
- Does the program appear to be organized?
- Is there supervised rest time in a calm, quiet space?
- Are there plenty of diversified materials for the children to play with?
- Are dramatic play, learning stations, science, music, art & math coordinated into the curriculum?
- Is there lots of laughing, caring and sharing between children and staff?
- Do the children look happy and engaged in their activities?
- Are the children allowed to have supervised free time to simply play?
- Can the parents/guardians drop by for a visit at any time?
- What is the facility discipline policy?
- Can you and your child have a “trial run” together to initiate day care at the facility?
- Does it appear that good behavior is encouraged with positive reinforcement?
- Is there a “sign in/sign out” procedure?
- Are parents involved with the facility and kept informed of events, policies, and opportunities for interaction?
- Does the facility appear to have parenting information readily available?
